There are many methods of guiding visitors through your site but the most effective navigation is always a combination of methods. If a visitor is confused by an icon, a meaningful text link will save the day. No matter what form your navigation interface takes, remember that what's obvious to you, may not be to others. It's easy to forget that new users are often unfamiliar with navigation methods.

In choosing styles for navigational elements you should try to reach a balance between aesthetics and functionality. All of the standard devices provided by HTML work well at a functional level and should be considered as a starting point.

On every page of your site, you must provide clear and unambiguous answers to the two basic questions your visitors will ask themselves, "Where I am?" and "Where do I go from here?". I wouldn't say, though, that this should be given priority over the niceties of design (as you may expect me to), simply because thoughtful and professional design is highly unlikely to hinder navigating the site. |
